Happiness Without Freedom or Freedom Without Happiness: Slavic Science Fiction Literature and Film as Political and Social Commentary
CSEEES Autumn 2023 K-14 Workshop
In this workshop participants will explore the world of “science fantasy” (known as science fiction in the West) literature and film from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Within this popular genre, writers and filmmakers criticized economic, political, and social issues that citizens in these regions were facing in their everyday lives. Participants will increase their knowledge about the events and history that inspired these works, how they have been received domestically and internationally in the past and present, and how they have influenced the creative output of their Anglophone counterparts. This year’s workshop will be led by Alexander Burry, Associate Professor of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University.
