SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Afghanistan in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Upstate New York has welcomed a significant number of Afghan families in recent years. This virtual workshop provides approaches and tools for elementary school educators to introduce Afghanistan into their curriculum and provide a nuanced view of the people and culture. Participating educators will receive (a) an overview of Afghanistan’s history and current political situation; (b) activity ideas and materials exploring cultural themes like holidays\, letters and numbers\, language\, food\, clothing\, etc.; and (c) age-appropriate songs and stories addressing more complex issues like education\, gender\, politics\, and religion. The workshop is facilitated by Akbar Quraishi and Amy Friers\, alumni of Syracuse University’s Public Administration and International Affairs program\, who both have extensive experience in Afghanistan. Together\, they founded an international relations-focused university in Kabul\, in addition to working with the previous Afghan government and NGOs in Afghanistan. This workshop is supported by the federally funded Cornell-Syracuse South Asia National Resource Center Consortium. “Afghanistan in the Classroom” is specifically designed for elementary grades\, though educators of all ages and subject areas are welcome to attend. \nRegistration deadline is August 13th.

Whether in urban or rural areas\, people across the world grapple with creating sustainable livelihoods\, ecosystems\, social infrastructures\, and economies. If resilience can be defined as the competence to reduce precarity during a crisis and build a more thriving society after\, how can we best encourage students to learn about and become agents for global resilience? \nThe 2024 Summer Institute offers a free\, week-long professional development opportunity for K-12 educators\, combining joint sessions with self-selected tracks that balance interactive activities with time for individual research while prioritizing support for the design of high-quality curricular materials. All sessions will be held virtually. \nTracks Offered: “Building Resilience in the Classroom” Acknowledging the various challenges that educators and their students face today\, this track will introduce content and strategies to empower participants with helpful tools to better engage and help their students. From understanding the “new normal” of remote instruction and learning\, to existential threats to society such as climate change\, to the rapidly changing EdTech landscape with the recent acceleration of AI tools\, sessions will focus on growth mindset strategies\, critical thinking\, and problem-solving skills\, and help to develop a global perspective on mental health and well-being. \nInterdisciplinary Global Educators Working Group (IGE) Educators will work collaboratively to draw on the expertise of colleagues at their schools and will model collaborative learning for their students by producing a deliverable in the form of a globalized unit\, lesson\, or module. SUMMARY:CLACS Summer Teacher Institute: Asian Diasporas in Latin America:
DESCRIPTION:This summer institute examines Asian migration to Latin America and the Caribbean since the mid-19th century\, the experience of their descendants as well the emergence of more recent Asian communities in the region. Presentations will explore the transnational labor demands which gave rise to significant Asian diaspora communities in Peru\, Brazil\, Cuba and Mexico\, the challenges of discrimination and anti-Asian violence and the resilience of these communities in enduring and adapting. The institute also considers late 20th century and contemporary Asian immigrant experiences as well as teaching resources appropriate for world history and Spanish language classrooms.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Africa
DESCRIPTION:In person at the University of Minnesota. \nThis is a Title VI  African Studies Initiative Summer. \nThe vulnerability of the African continent to climate change cannot be overstated. According to a recent article\, “due to the widespread impacts of climate change” Africa is “losing 5% to 15% of its gross domestic product growth annually. Seventeen of the twenty countries most affected by climate change are located in Africa.” The purpose of this institute is to share current knowledge\, resources\, and ideas about climate change mitigation\, climate change adaptation\, and climate justice in Africa with educators to enable them to develop classroom materials that they will use in their various curricula. Through the stories of African women whose destinies have changed the course of history\, learners will gain a better understanding of African societies and the ways in which women navigate social expectations.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Cornell University Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and the South Asia Center at Syracuse University for the 2024 International Studies Summer Institute (ISSI)! This year we will explore plant and animal migration around the world and at home. The ISSI is a professional development workshop for practicing and pre-service K–12 educators. \nParticipants will engage in sessions that explore the patterns and causes of plant and animal migration in a global context\, as well as how they affect and are affected by human society. Scholars from Cornell University and Syracuse University will share their research and expertise from across different regions of the world\, including Africa\, East Asia\, Europe\, Latin America and the Caribbean\, South Asia\, and Southeast Asia. \nObject-Based Learning will be a specific focus of the 2024 ISSI. Sessions will include an introduction to the Einaudi Center’s Culture Kits and how they can support hands-on learning about plant and animal migration in different countries. The Culture Kits are a collection of cultural artifacts from around the world\, tailored for use in K-12 classrooms. We will also feature an overview of Latin American and East Asian artwork at the Johnson Museum of Art\, centered around plant and animal migration\, and an introduction to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird kits. \nBENEFITS: \nParticipating educators will… \n– gain tools\, activities and knowledge to apply in your classroom around issues of plant and animal migration internationally and in our back yards.\n– connect issues affecting yourself and your students here in the US with other parts of the world.\n– “recharge” intellectual batteries and deepen your own understanding and appreciation for plant and animal migration.\n– have the option to complete a lesson plan for additional CTLE hours that incorporates content from the workshop\, with the support of our outreach staff.\n– receive a free eBird kit from the Lab of Ornithology\, targeted for the grade band of choice ($70 – $110 value). \nWHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: \nWe welcome practicing and pre-service K–12 educators of all subjects and grade levels who work in New York State. While the 2024 ISSI will have more of a scientific focus than in past years\, we believe this year’s theme will benefit educators of all subject areas\, especially in developing cross-disciplinary\, project-based activities with a global focus. DESCRIPTION:Summer Institute for k-12 Teachers\nMigration is a core part of the human experience and one of our oldest tools to respond to environmental changes. But current news about both climate change and migration can be panic-inducing. This summer institute for k-12 teachers explores the intersection of climate and migration with realism rather than hysteria. We’ll explore past examples of climate-related migration\, the nuanced relationship between climate and migration in the present\, migration as depicted in the arts\, and possible futures. \n\nThis institute is open to k-12 teachers across disciplines. \nThis FREE program will take place in person. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited to 24 people on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nProfessional development credit is available upon request during the registration process. Teachers who attend for credit will be expected to submit a lesson plan featuring material used in the program.

SUMMARY:World History and Literature Initiative K-12 PD Educators Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan International Institute’s World History and Literature Initiative (WHaLI) 2024 will explore the contested nature of histories worldwide\, across case studies set in Sub-Saharan Africa\, Latin America and the Caribbean\, East Asia\, South Asia\, Southeast Asia\, and the Middle East and North Africa. Discussions will include the politicization of educational spaces\, multiple intentions underlying efforts to prescribe curricula\, and ways that identity\, power\, and emotions map onto different interpretations. Participants and speakers will reflect on how to teach contested pasts with accuracy\, complexity\, and multi-perspectivity\, how contested histories are featured in both historical and literary accounts of important events\, and consider how to support and develop the critical literacies students need to make sense of conflicting ideas. Inviting students to opportunities to analyze contested histories around the world critically can create spaces for democratic dialogue\, empathy\, reconciliation\, and critical understanding. \nThe two-day workshop for middle school and high school teachers focuses on these issues\, using examples drawn from different historical times and areas of the world. The workshop will also illuminate challenges students face in learning such content\, explore ways teachers might meet those challenges\, and provide participants with relevant resources that can be used in the classroom.

SUMMARY:EPIC Symposium: Integrating Global Topics into Community College Curricula
DESCRIPTION:At the annual Education Partnership for Internationalizing Curriculum (EPIC) Symposium\, community college faculty and administrators from across the U.S. will gather in person to discuss ways to prepare students for a world that is increasingly interconnected. Join us for our ninth annual symposium about the challenges and opportunities of developing global studies at community colleges. \nThe day will include presentations from Stanford faculty as well as community college professors who have collaborated with Stanford University partners to integrate international topics into their curricula. Presentations will feature adapted lesson plans and course material as well as strategies for reaching diverse student populations. This event is free and open to all community college faculty\, administrators\, librarians\, and counselors. \nParticipants are invited to attend the in-person event on the Stanford campus. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for attendees. Registration is free but required for attendance.

SUMMARY:Pirates and Bandits: Teaching the Myths and Realities in the K-12 Classroom: An NCTA & Global Studies Center Mini-Course
DESCRIPTION:ARRGH\, Avast Ye Swabs! (or so pirates are supposed to say…) Join us for a swashbuckling mini course on historical bandits and pirates around the world. What are the myths? What are the facts? Faculty experts will discuss global piracy\, representations of pirates in the media\, piracy in the Atlantic world\, and bandits in East Asia. We will also discuss curricular applications of pirates and bandits for the K-12 classroom. This mini-course is particularly applicable for teachers of World History\, U.S. History\, East Asia studies\, Global Studies\, Film Studies and World Cultures. \nWe strongly encourage in-person attendance\, but the program will be hybrid\, and you may choose to attend online or in person. All participants will receive Globalization: A Very Short Introduction; in-person participants will receive an extra book. Benefits also include a Certificate of Completion and some travel reimbursement subsidies available for in-person attendees who live at least one hour outside of the Pittsburgh area. Pennsylvania teachers will also receive Act 48 hours.

DESCRIPTION:The Ohio State University is now accepting applications for the online Global Teacher Seminar “Global Goal People: Global Efforts to Alleviate Food Insecurity and Poverty” for teachers in any state. Pre-service teachers are strongly encouraged to apply. This online summer seminar will inform K-14 educators about the UN’s Sustainability Goals\, specifically focusing on issues surrounding poverty and food insecurity in the regions of Africa\, East Asia\, Eastern Europe/Eurasia\, Latin America\, and the Middle East. The seminar will start by giving participants a solid foundation in the relevant agricultural\, political\, social\, and historical theories and practices to build their understanding of issues surrounding these topics from a global perspective. Throughout the seminar\, participants will hear from guest experts who will present regional case studies to provide comparative views of what prominent challenges and issues in their respective region are and what has been or is currently being done to help alleviate these matters.
