DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for Latin American Studies as we host Dr. Bruno Estigarribia\, Professor of Spanish & Hispanic Linguistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, for a lecture on indigenous languages. Dr. Estigarribia will reflect on his work writing A Grammar of  Paraguayan Guarani\, published by UCL Press in 2020. Zoom registration required. \nAbstract\nEvery scientific enterprise has\, as we know\, far-reaching implications beyond its own somewhat circumscribed conclusions. Linguistic research intersects on the one hand with issues of language identity and language ownership\, and on the other hand with political issues and language planning. I plan to share with you in this talk part of my work on the grammar of Guarani\, informed by my studies of its five centuries long contact with Spanish\, and how even a “purely scientific” description of the language needs to come terms with these larger issues.

You’re invited to an evening with Yasmín Ramírez\, author of the award-winning memoir ¡Ándale\, Prieta! \n\n\nWhen I tell people who don’t speak Spanish what prieta means–dark or the dark one–their eyes pop open and a small gasp escapes . . . How do I tell them that now\, even after the cruelty of children\, Prieta means love? That each time Prieta fell from Ita’s lips\, I learned to love my dark skin. \nNo one calls me that anymore. I miss how her words sounded out loud. \nMy Ita called me Prieta. When she died\, she took the name with her. \nAnchored by the tough grandmother who taught her how to stand firm and throw a punch\, debut author Yasmín Ramírez writes about the punches life’s thrown her non-traditional family of tough Mexican American women. \nHaving spent years of her twenties feeling lost–working an intensely taxing retail job and turning to bars for comfort–the blow of her grandmother’s death pushes Yasmín to unravel. So she comes home to El Paso\, Texas\, where people know how to spell her accented name and her mother helps her figure out what to do with her life. Once she finally starts pursuing her passion for writing\, Yasmín finds herself processing her grief by painting a portrait of her Ita\, a resilient matriarch who was far from being a stereotypical abuelita. She remembers coming along to watch boxing matches at a dive bar as a child\, Ita wistfully singing old Mexican classics\, her mastectomy scar\, and of course\, her lesson on how to properly ball your fist for a good punch. Interviewing her mom and older sister\, Yasmín learns even more about why her Ita was so tough–the abusive men\, the toil of almost-literally back-breaking jobs\, and the guilt of abortions that went against her culture. \nExpertly blending the lyrical prose of a gifted author with the down-to-earth\, conversational remarks of a close friend\, this debut memoir marks Ramírez as a talented new author to watch. DESCRIPTION:The K-16 Education Outreach Program at the African Studies Center hosts an annual series of book group meetings wherein participants of all ages and backgrounds are invited to read and discuss engaging novels by African authors. \nWe offer two book discussion groups: one focuses on African literature written in or translated to English\, and another one focuses on African literature written in or translated to French\, discussed in French. The English book group is now in its 16th year. See the full list of books read over fifteen years here. \nThese programs are free and open to all. Participants must procure a copy of their own books. \nJoin us on March 27th\, from 4 to 6 PM ET to discuss Shenaz Patel’s The Silence of the Chagos & find out about a true history that is relevant to all in the United States. Teachers can read the book either in French or in English and the discussion will occur in English. \nA related workshop for social studies educators on the history of the Chagos Islands\, the Chagossian People\, the British Empire and the United States will occur on Saturday April 6th\, 2024 at 10 AM ET\, and will bring together scholars\, activists from the Chagossian community\, zooming in from Mauritius.

Consider applying for the Engaging Eurasia Teacher Fellowship! \nApplications for the 2024-2025 fellowship year\, which is devoted to the theme Explorations of Identity in Russian & Eurasian Studies\, are now open. The application deadline is May 1\, 2024.\nThis year-long study will take a multidisciplinary approach to understanding identity in Eurasia. The fellowship will allow participants to take a deep dive into the complex nature of identity\, how it is created and perceived\, how it changes\, and how it can be politicized and polarized. The monthly webinars will help contextualize historically the many aspects that contribute to identity\, ranging from topics like nationality\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, and race. Fellows will consider novels\, poetry\, art\, film\, and other media that both shape perspective and cultural identity as well as how identity is viewed and interpreted globally. They will also be asked to challenge their own assumptions and commonly held beliefs about identity and culture in Eurasia. \nOver the 9-month fellowship\, fellows will participate in 8 content webinars\, hearing from scholars with expertise on the fellowship topic. DESCRIPTION:The Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual event since 2002 designed to provide undergraduate students\, from the University of Pittsburgh and other colleges and universities\, with advanced research experiences and opportunities to develop presentation skills. The event is open to undergraduates from all majors and institutions who have written a research paper from a social science\, humanities\, or business perspective focusing on the study of Eastern\, Western\, or Central Europe\, the European Union\, Russia\, or Central Eurasia. \nAfter the initial submission of papers\, selected participants are grouped into panels according to their research topics. The participants then give 10- to 15-minute presentations based on their research to a panel of faculty and graduate students. SUMMARY:DEADLINE - Summer Institute for Global Educators 2024: Educating for Global Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Summer Institute offers a free\, week-long professional development opportunity with additional stipends for K-12 educators. The institute combines joint sessions with self-selected tracks that balance interactive activities with time for individual research while prioritizing support for the design of high-quality curricular materials. Tracks 1 and 3 below require individual applications\, while Track 2 requires a working group (of 2-4 teachers) application. All sessions will be held virtually. \nGlobal conflicts\, climate change\, and unequal development challenge both societal and personal resilience by causing displacement\, restricting resources\, and counteracting efforts for a renewable world. Whether in urban or rural areas\, people across the world grapple with creating sustainable livelihoods\, ecosystems\, social infrastructures\, and economies. If resilience can be defined as the competence to reduce precarity during a crisis and build a more thriving society after\, how can we best encourage students to learn about and become agents for global resilience? \nTracks Offered: \n“Building Resilience in the Classroom”\nAcknowledging the various challenges that educators and their students face today\, this track will introduce content and strategies to empower participants with helpful tools to better engage and help their students. From understanding the “new normal” of remote instruction and learning\, to existential threats to society such as climate change\, to the rapidly changing EdTech landscape with the recent acceleration of AI tools\, sessions will focus on growth mindset strategies\, critical thinking\, and problem-solving skills\, and help to develop a global perspective on mental health and well-being. \nInterdisciplinary Global Educators Working Group (IGE)\nEducators will work collaboratively to draw on the expertise of colleagues at their schools and will model collaborative learning for their students by producing a deliverable in the form of a globalized unit\, lesson\, or module. Examples of proposed group projects could include Science and French language teachers teaming up to offer a lesson on global warming in the Francophone world; or Art\, English\, and Social Studies teachers collaboratively developing a unit on responses to the global refugee crisis in art and literature. Apply as a team of 2-4 teachers from different subject areas from the same school. \n“Teaching Global Conflicts”\nThis track fosters an understanding of conflicts and peace-building through education. Sessions will illustrate the critical role of education in addressing and mitigating global conflicts\, with a specific emphasis on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by conflicts across various world regions.  Educators will delve into strategies for promoting peace\, understanding\, and reconciliation through educational initiatives. Educators will be empowered to effectively navigate sensitive topics\, engage students in meaningful discussions\, and cultivate a generation of global citizens committed to peace-building in societies and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:K-12 Educators! \nJoin us for this year’s Summer Institute\, “Towards A More Equitable & Inclusive Digital World In Latin America\,” at Vanderbilt University\, June 24-28\, 2024. For more information\, visit the summer institute website or go directly to the application form here. \nThe institute will introduce participants to Latin Americanist scholars and educators who use digital technology to expand knowledge about Latin America and its people\, as well as activists using digital platforms as a tool for social justice in the region. The institute will include hands-on workshops demonstrating how to use digital platforms in the K-12 classroom to address the diverse learning needs of all students. Participants will gain access to digital archives that can facilitate lesson planning and classroom teaching on Latin America.We offer financial assistance to be used for travel\, lodging\, registration fees\, and/or materials. Funds are limited. To be granted a travel award\, educators should be willing to create at least one lesson plan based on the content presented during the Institute and submit it by January 8th\, 2025. \nIf interested in financial assistance\, please submit a travel award request by February 26\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) is now accepting applications for its biennial “CLASP Teaching Award for K–12 Educators.” The award recognizes excellence and innovation in the teaching of Latin America and/or the Caribbean by elementary\, middle\, and high school teachers. CLASP proudly honors teachers who have demonstrated continued dedication to developing an engaging and dynamic portrait of Latin America that goes beyond the textbook. Teachers of any subject at the K-12 level are eligible to apply. \nApplications will be reviewed and evaluated for teaching skills\, development of innovative teaching materials and strategies\, leadership\, and professional development accomplishments. \nApplication Materials \n2024 CLASP Teaching Award for K–12 Educators INSTRUCTIONS \nOnline application form\, which includes the following supporting materials: \n\n(a) Resume or C.V.\n(b) Evidence of how applicant has integrated Latin American and/or Caribbean content into their classes\, including their approach to the teaching of Latin America and how it has helped students attain the goals of the class (1–2 pages)\n(c) Other documentation (e.g.\, excerpts from lesson plans\, student work\, professional development presentation) (optional\, but strongly encouraged).\n\nA 1–2-page letter of recommendation from a colleague (peer or supervisor)  providing evidence of the following: \n\nOutstanding teaching effectiveness\, including methods and student successes stories\nInnovation/creativity in the presentation of Latin American/Caribbean content\nInvolvement in professional development and/or community engagement related to Latin America and/or the Caribbean (i.e.\, the applicant seeks opportunities to learn about/engage with the region)\n\nApplication materials must be submitted by February 25\, 2024. \nApply here. \nSubmit letter of recommendation here.  \nThe award recipient will be announced in late May 2024 and will be awarded a $500 cash prize. \nQuestions about this award should be directed to Molly Aufdermauer at mollyauf@stanford.edu. \nApplicants’ names\, email addresses\, and school affiliations will be added to the CLASP email listserv\, which is used to announce professional development opportunities and teaching resources offered by CLASP and/or its member institutions. SUMMARY:KITA Lessons for American Preschools
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for students\, administrators\, educators\, community leaders and practitioners to join this special opportunity investigating preschool programs with high populations of immigrant children in Germany in order to impact our Minnesota preschool programs. First time international travelers and those reflecting Minnesota’s increasingly diverse student population are encouraged to apply. \nAccepted participants will join Deborah Jane from the Institute for Global Studies and Ann Besser retired faculty from North Hennepin Community College to delve into KITAs of Germany\, with a focus on the preschool immigrant experience. KITA’s are German daycares for children under 6. Through site visits to German nursery schools and daycare centers\, KITA Lessons for American Preschools will teach participants about the educational foundations of early childhood education\, both the practical applications and best practices\, but also about pitfalls and problems encountered by German initiatives. Moreover\, the proposal aims at fostering professional relationships between the American participants and their German colleagues. \nFrom visiting KITAs in Berlin\, Brandenburg and Erfurt\, participants will learn about the ways each state runs their KITAs while having time with colleagues to experience local cultural sites. Through this intensive study tour participants will continue on their journeys to better Minnesota preschools. \nAccepted applicants will have their airfare\, in-country travel\, travel insurance and lodging covered for this experience.  Program participants will be responsible for meals and incidentals. \nApplication deadline January 31\, 2024

The Take & Go Into the Classroom Series introduces teachers to interactive modules that bring together a variety of visuals\, content experts\, reading\, activities\, and assessments. William M. Tsutsui\, author of the Key Issues in Asian Studies book\, Japanese Popular Culture & Globalization will give an overview and then discuss this topic with the group. Take & Go Into the Classroom Series resources related to China will be highlighted that connect with Social Studies\, Language Arts\, Science\, Visual Arts and other content areas\, providing educators with an opportunity to use the resources either as stand-alone or cross-curricular learning opportunities. While supplies last\, Japanese Popular Culture & Globalization will be sent to workshop participants.
