DESCRIPTION:The international educators’ program\, Teachers Collaborating Across Borders (TCAB) is now accepting applications for the 2024-25 academic year! This program\, organized by the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the North Carolina Consortium for Middle East Studies\, accepts 20 teachers from the US and 20 teachers from across the Middle East and North Africa. This cohort of 40 will meet biweekly during the Fall Semester\, half synchronously\, half asynchronously\, to learn about teaching around the world. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Learning in World History is thrilled to announce its call for applications for “Truth\, Misinformation\, and Technology in World History” a one-day virtual professional development workshop held on Saturday\, June 1 from 10:30am-4:00pm Eastern. The ALWH welcomes applications from educators at all levels who would like to explore how to teach and talk about “Truth\, Misinformation\, and Technology” in a world historical context in their classroom. The theme of is intended to include the widest range of topics and geographic locales. The event also provides teacher’s with the opportunity to workshop their own syllabus or assignment that engages with the workshop theme. All accepted participants will receive a $200 stipend. Apply by April 15\, 2024! \nWorkshop Description: These days\, educators at all levels are worried about technology in their classrooms. How can we help our students use it responsibly? How can we\, as teachers\, incorporate technology in our classrooms in ways that help students think about truth claims and the link between information and power? \nWhile AI and ChatGPT dominate today’s discussions about these issues\, concern about technology\, authenticity\, and authority have a long and global history. SUMMARY:Pirates and Bandits: Teaching the Myths and Realities in the K-12 Classroom: An NCTA & Global Studies Center Mini-Course
DESCRIPTION:ARRGH\, Avast Ye Swabs! (or so pirates are supposed to say…) Join us for a swashbuckling mini course on historical bandits and pirates around the world. What are the myths? What are the facts? Faculty experts will discuss global piracy\, representations of pirates in the media\, piracy in the Atlantic world\, and bandits in East Asia. We will also discuss curricular applications of pirates and bandits for the K-12 classroom. This mini-course is particularly applicable for teachers of World History\, U.S. History\, East Asia studies\, Global Studies\, Film Studies and World Cultures. \nWe strongly encourage in-person attendance\, but the program will be hybrid\, and you may choose to attend online or in person. All participants will receive Globalization: A Very Short Introduction; in-person participants will receive an extra book. Benefits also include a Certificate of Completion and some travel reimbursement subsidies available for in-person attendees who live at least one hour outside of the Pittsburgh area. Pennsylvania teachers will also receive Act 48 hours.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for Latin American Studies as we host Dr. Bruno Estigarribia\, Professor of Spanish & Hispanic Linguistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, for a lecture on indigenous languages. Dr. Estigarribia will reflect on his work writing A Grammar of  Paraguayan Guarani\, published by UCL Press in 2020. Zoom registration required. \nAbstract\nEvery scientific enterprise has\, as we know\, far-reaching implications beyond its own somewhat circumscribed conclusions. Linguistic research intersects on the one hand with issues of language identity and language ownership\, and on the other hand with political issues and language planning. I plan to share with you in this talk part of my work on the grammar of Guarani\, informed by my studies of its five centuries long contact with Spanish\, and how even a “purely scientific” description of the language needs to come terms with these larger issues.

You’re invited to an evening with Yasmín Ramírez\, author of the award-winning memoir ¡Ándale\, Prieta! \n\n\nWhen I tell people who don’t speak Spanish what prieta means–dark or the dark one–their eyes pop open and a small gasp escapes . . . How do I tell them that now\, even after the cruelty of children\, Prieta means love? That each time Prieta fell from Ita’s lips\, I learned to love my dark skin. \nNo one calls me that anymore. I miss how her words sounded out loud. \nMy Ita called me Prieta. When she died\, she took the name with her. \nAnchored by the tough grandmother who taught her how to stand firm and throw a punch\, debut author Yasmín Ramírez writes about the punches life’s thrown her non-traditional family of tough Mexican American women. \nHaving spent years of her twenties feeling lost–working an intensely taxing retail job and turning to bars for comfort–the blow of her grandmother’s death pushes Yasmín to unravel. So she comes home to El Paso\, Texas\, where people know how to spell her accented name and her mother helps her figure out what to do with her life. SUMMARY:African French & English Literature Book Group Discussion: Reading The Silence of the Chagos
DESCRIPTION:The K-16 Education Outreach Program at the African Studies Center hosts an annual series of book group meetings wherein participants of all ages and backgrounds are invited to read and discuss engaging novels by African authors. \nWe offer two book discussion groups: one focuses on African literature written in or translated to English\, and another one focuses on African literature written in or translated to French\, discussed in French. The English book group is now in its 16th year. See the full list of books read over fifteen years here. \nThese programs are free and open to all. Participants must procure a copy of their own books. \nJoin us on March 27th\, from 4 to 6 PM ET to discuss Shenaz Patel’s The Silence of the Chagos & find out about a true history that is relevant to all in the United States. Consider applying for the Engaging Eurasia Teacher Fellowship! \nApplications for the 2024-2025 fellowship year\, which is devoted to the theme Explorations of Identity in Russian & Eurasian Studies\, are now open. The application deadline is May 1\, 2024.\nThis year-long study will take a multidisciplinary approach to understanding identity in Eurasia. The fellowship will allow participants to take a deep dive into the complex nature of identity\, how it is created and perceived\, how it changes\, and how it can be politicized and polarized. The monthly webinars will help contextualize historically the many aspects that contribute to identity\, ranging from topics like nationality\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, and race. Fellows will consider novels\, poetry\, art\, film\, and other media that both shape perspective and cultural identity as well as how identity is viewed and interpreted globally. DESCRIPTION:The Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual event since 2002 designed to provide undergraduate students\, from the University of Pittsburgh and other colleges and universities\, with advanced research experiences and opportunities to develop presentation skills. The event is open to undergraduates from all majors and institutions who have written a research paper from a social science\, humanities\, or business perspective focusing on the study of Eastern\, Western\, or Central Europe\, the European Union\, Russia\, or Central Eurasia. \nAfter the initial submission of papers\, selected participants are grouped into panels according to their research topics. The participants then give 10- to 15-minute presentations based on their research to a panel of faculty and graduate students. The presentations are open to the public. \nApplications are due by January 7th\, 2024. Limited travel grants are available to help defray travel expenses for accepted participants located outside the Pittsburgh region.
