DESCRIPTION:The K-16 Education Outreach Program at the African Studies Center hosts an annual series of book group meetings wherein participants of all ages and backgrounds are invited to read and discuss engaging novels by African authors. \nWe offer two book discussion groups: one focuses on African literature written in or translated to English\, and another one focuses on African literature written in or translated to French\, discussed in French. The English book group is now in its 16th year. See the full list of books read over fifteen years here. \nThese programs are free and open to all. Participants must procure a copy of their own books. \nJoin us to read Imbolo Mbue’s powerful novel How Beautiful We Were with contemporary themes that will speak to all on January 24th\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Reading the World: A Book Group for K-12 Educators Focused on Global Literature
DESCRIPTION:About:\nBrazilian educator Paulo Freire writes\, “Reading is not exhausted merely by decoding the written word or written language\, but rather anticipated by and extending into knowledge of the world. Reading the world precedes reading the word\, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined” (The Importance of the Act of Reading). \nJoin the University of Arizona Centers for East Asian Studies\, Latin American Studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies for our Reading the World book group. Inspired by Freire’s words\, we aim to create a space dedicated to educators discussing authentic and engaging global literature for elementary\, middle\, and high school classrooms. We welcome in-service and pre-service teachers\, educational aides\, administrators\, and librarians. \nWe meet each month from 4:30-6:00 pm at Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee (4675 E Speedway Blvd\, Tucson\, AZ). We welcome your participation whether you’ve read the whole book or a single page. Monthly attendance is encouraged but not required. These events are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. A certificate of professional development will be provided upon request. \nThis Month:\nOur January title is the young adult novel Morning Sun in Wuhan by Ying Chang Compestine. \nWeaving in the tastes and sounds of the historic city\, Wuhan’s comforting and distinctive cuisine comes to life as the reader follows 13-year-old Mei who\, through her love for cooking\, makes a difference in her community. Written by an award-winning author originally from Wuhan.  \nGrieving the death of her mother and an outcast at school\, thirteen-year-old Mei finds solace in cooking and computer games. When her friend’s grandmother falls ill\, Mei seeks out her father\, a doctor\, for help\, and discovers the hospital is overcrowded. As the virus spreads\, Mei finds herself alone in a locked-down city trying to find a way to help. \nAuthor Ying Chang Compestine draws on her own experiences growing up in Wuhan to illustrate that the darkest times can bring out the best in people\, friendship can give one courage in frightening times\, and most importantly\, young people can make an impact on the world. Readers can follow Mei’s tantalizing recipes and cook them at home.  \nFind the book at your local library or preferred bookseller.  \nIf you love the book and want to use it in your classroom\, The Center for East Asian Studies has a book set of 25 copies available to borrow through their Lending Library. SUMMARY:Unpacking Foreign Military Presences in Africa: Understanding the issue with the Chagos Islands & Diego Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Responding to current issues\, these workshops aim to shed light on military presences operating in Africa and ways Africans grapple with them. To support teachers in contextualizing military groups’ activities in Africa\, we are offering a webinar series to delve into not only into various military groups’ roles\, including The Wagner Group\, the U.S. Africa Command\, U.S. Military bases\, China\, and France. The webinar series explains basic definitions\, provides clear contextualizations to understand the role of these forces in various contexts on the continent. Webinars will take place throughout the 23-24 academic year. Each webinar will: \n\nSituate the groups in a larger geopolitical context and in relation to competing military groups on the continent\nIdentify countries and places of operation and give examples of consequences of this operation\, and of African resistance and criticism.\nDiscuss why teachers should know about this military activity as responsive global actors.\n\nDuring this workshop\, we will view John Pilger’s documentary Stealing a Nation\, meet with key activists who have been working on the Chagossian struggle\, and meet with Chagossian refugees in Mauritius.

DESCRIPTION:In response to the waves of refugees from Africa and the Middle East arriving in the Italian island\, Lampedusa\, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY)\, led by Deborah Soria\, launched the project “Silent Books\, from the world to Lampedusa and back” in 2012. The project involved creating the first library on Lampedusa to be used by local and immigrant children and annual Silent Book lists and exhibits that travel the globe.

The presenter\, Nektaria Tziora\, will speak about the programme’s strengths and weaknesses and share her thoughts on challenges and opportunities for the future. Her first degree is in German Literature\, and her second degree is in Business Administration. Nektaria holds an MBA in Hospitality\, as well as an M.Ed. She is a certified adult educator and a teachers’ trainer by the A Greek Institute for Educational Policies-certified adult educator and teachers’ trainer\, Nektaria has worked in Greek primary and secondary schools for more than a decade. Since 2017 she has been working at the Second Chance School of Nigrita for adult male prisoners. Her professional inerests lie primarily in the use of new technologies in education and adult education for disadvantaged social groups.

DESCRIPTION:Happiness Without Freedom or Freedom Without Happiness: Slavic Science Fiction Literature and Film as Political and Social Commentary\nCSEEES Autumn 2023 K-14 Workshop \nIn this workshop participants will explore the world of “science fantasy” (known as science fiction in the West) literature and film from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Within this popular genre\, writers and filmmakers criticized economic\, political\, and social issues that citizens in these regions were facing in their everyday lives. Participants will increase their knowledge about the events and history that inspired these works\, how they have been received domestically and internationally in the past and present\, and how they have influenced the creative output of their Anglophone counterparts. This year’s workshop will be led by Alexander Burry\, Associate Professor of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University.
