SUMMARY:KITA Lessons for American Preschools
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for students\, administrators\, educators\, community leaders and practitioners to join this special opportunity investigating preschool programs with high populations of immigrant children in Germany in order to impact our Minnesota preschool programs. First time international travelers and those reflecting Minnesota’s increasingly diverse student population are encouraged to apply. \nAccepted participants will join Deborah Jane from the Institute for Global Studies and Ann Besser retired faculty from North Hennepin Community College to delve into KITAs of Germany\, with a focus on the preschool immigrant experience. KITA’s are German daycares for children under 6. Through site visits to German nursery schools and daycare centers\, KITA Lessons for American Preschools will teach participants about the educational foundations of early childhood education\, both the practical applications and best practices\, but also about pitfalls and problems encountered by German initiatives. Moreover\, the proposal aims at fostering professional relationships between the American participants and their German colleagues. \nFrom visiting KITAs in Berlin\, Brandenburg and Erfurt\, participants will learn about the ways each state runs their KITAs while having time with colleagues to experience local cultural sites. Through this intensive study tour participants will continue on their journeys to better Minnesota preschools. \nAccepted applicants will have their airfare\, in-country travel\, travel insurance and lodging covered for this experience.  Program participants will be responsible for meals and incidentals. \nApplication deadline January 31\, 2024

Reading the world precedes reading the word\, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined” (The Importance of the Act of Reading). \nJoin the University of Arizona Centers for East Asian Studies\, Latin American Studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies for our Reading the World book group. Inspired by Freire’s words\, we aim to create a space dedicated to educators discussing authentic and engaging global literature for elementary\, middle\, and high school classrooms. SUMMARY:Globalizing Rural Teacher Training Mentorship
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Professional Education at rural Bemidji State University will partner with the Institute for Global Studies at the University of Minnesota to connect teacher candidates with global-minded educators from across the United States. \nThis year\, 4-5 experienced licensed teachers will work with Deborah Jane at the Institute for Global Studies and Dr. Kathrina O’Connell to mentor teacher candidates in Language Arts 1 (ED 3201) and Language Arts II (ED 3202) in working with representational texts that feature indigenous peoples throughout the world. \nSince 2021\, the Institute for Global Studies has provided the BSU A.C. Clark Library with hundreds of award-winning global books (including those featuring indigenous peoples) for the Children and Young Adult section. Not only will this project support the use of these books in teacher candidates’ field experiences in Bemidji-area schools\, but it will also support the development of the teacher candidates’ culturally reflective teaching practices. This project will also support the continued professional development of those educators wishing to be mentors. \nThe mentors and teacher candidates will meet online with BSU faculty member Dr. Kathrina O’Connell to analyze attributes of effective texts and plan collaborative and creative learning activities that correspond with the books. \nFinally\, the mentors will work with select students to prepare a recorded session which will be featured at the educator Diverse Texts Conference in Bemidji\, Minnesota at the end of July 2024. \nThis year\, we are particularly looking for mentors who have worked with Indigenous students. \n If you are accepted\, you will be expected to \n\n1) attend a virtual training on January 29\, 2024 from 6 pm-8 pm CST.\n2) develop a lesson for an award-winning picture book which will be shared on the Institute for Global Studies Educator Resource Website\, and which will be shared at summer conference (see number 4).\n2) attend two partial days of virtual meetings Thursday March 21\, 2024\, from 9:30-10:45am AND 12:30pm-1:45pm (Central Time) and Thursday\, March 28\, 2024 9:30am-10:45am AND 12:30pm-1:45pm (Central Time) with Bemidi State University teacher candidates where you will be offering feedback and facilitating engaging discussions on their ideas of how to use global picture books (with a thematic focus on indigeneity) in the classroom.\n4) Create virtual recorded session with student teacher candidate for the Diverse Texts conference in Bemidji Minnesota July 22-23\, 2024.\n\nIf accepted into this program\, you will receive a $1000 stipend. Mentors are invited to attend the Diverse Texts Conference in Bemidji. If you choose to do this\, you will be responsible for your own travel. Dorm lodging and conference registration will be free for you. \nApplications due December 1\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Experiencing the Pine Ridge Reservation with Students
DESCRIPTION:January 26\, 2024 \n\n2:00 pm-3:00 pm Eastern\n1:00 pm-2:00pm Central\n12pm-1:00 pm Mountain\n11:00 am-12:00 pm Pacific\n\nPlease join us for a special January session of our Global Studies Virtual Symposium\, an event that connects global studies scholars and educators across community college campuses nationwide. The symposium offers an engaging teaching and learning forum for sharing best practices\, ideas\, and resources with colleagues. \nBeginning in the spring of 2016\, Dr Amy Magnus created a new course at South Central College entitled: Dakota History\, Culture and Language. This course had several goals: to teach the Dakota history and culture\, to introduce students to the Dakota language\, (with an Upper Sioux tribal member) and to engage in some sort of trip/service learning opportunity on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Over seventy-five students took part in this experience and were introduced to Lakota culture\, visited historic sites like the Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial\, and spent a day volunteering at one of the reservation elementary schools. This presentation will discuss this experience. \nDr. Amy Magnus has been teaching at South Central College in North Mankato\, Minnesota\, for over twenty years. With a Ph.D. in Multi-Cultural literature from Case Western Reserve University and a credential in American Indian Studies\, she has created the American Indian Studies courses at the college. Teaching these courses as well as film\, English classes\, and American Racial Minorites\, Dr. Magnus works to share these cultures with her students both in and out of the classroom.  As the coordinator of the SCC Global Conference\, a large two-day event that occurs every two years\, she has worked to bring artists\, musicians\, and speakers from other cultures and backgrounds to the campus. She has also created courses that seek to include learning outside the classroom\, such as an Indigenous Cuisine course she created for SCC’s Culinary Program\, and the course she will be talking about today\, Dakota History\, Culture and Language\, a class that includes a service-learning opportunity and trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

SUMMARY:Reading the World: A Book Group for K-12 Educators Focused on Global Literature
DESCRIPTION:About:\nBrazilian educator Paulo Freire writes\, “Reading is not exhausted merely by decoding the written word or written language\, but rather anticipated by and extending into knowledge of the world. Reading the world precedes reading the word\, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined” (The Importance of the Act of Reading). \nJoin the University of Arizona Centers for East Asian Studies\, Latin American Studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies for our Reading the World book group. Inspired by Freire’s words\, we aim to create a space dedicated to educators discussing authentic and engaging global literature for elementary\, middle\, and high school classrooms. We welcome in-service and pre-service teachers\, educational aides\, administrators\, and librarians. \nWe meet each month from 4:30-6:00 pm at Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee (4675 E Speedway Blvd\, Tucson\, AZ). We welcome your participation whether you’ve read the whole book or a single page. Monthly attendance is encouraged but not required. These events are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. A certificate of professional development will be provided upon request. \nThis Month:\nOur January title is the young adult novel Morning Sun in Wuhan by Ying Chang Compestine. \nWeaving in the tastes and sounds of the historic city\, Wuhan’s comforting and distinctive cuisine comes to life as the reader follows 13-year-old Mei who\, through her love for cooking\, makes a difference in her community. Written by an award-winning author originally from Wuhan.  \nGrieving the death of her mother and an outcast at school\, thirteen-year-old Mei finds solace in cooking and computer games. When her friend’s grandmother falls ill\, Mei seeks out her father\, a doctor\, for help\, and discovers the hospital is overcrowded. SUMMARY:Unpacking Foreign Military Presences in Africa: Understanding the issue with the Chagos Islands & Diego Garcia
DESCRIPTION:Responding to current issues\, these workshops aim to shed light on military presences operating in Africa and ways Africans grapple with them. To support teachers in contextualizing military groups’ activities in Africa\, we are offering a webinar series to delve into not only into various military groups’ roles\, including The Wagner Group\, the U.S. Africa Command\, U.S. Military bases\, China\, and France. The webinar series explains basic definitions\, provides clear contextualizations to understand the role of these forces in various contexts on the continent. Webinars will take place throughout the 23-24 academic year. Each webinar will: \n\nSituate the groups in a larger geopolitical context and in relation to competing military groups on the continent\nIdentify countries and places of operation and give examples of consequences of this operation\, and of African resistance and criticism.\nDiscuss why teachers should know about this military activity as responsive global actors.\n\nDuring this workshop\, we will view John Pilger’s documentary Stealing a Nation\, meet with key activists who have been working on the Chagossian struggle\, and meet with Chagossian refugees in Mauritius.

SUMMARY:Silent Books: Sharing Wordless Picture Books across Cultures and Languages
DESCRIPTION:In response to the waves of refugees from Africa and the Middle East arriving in the Italian island\, Lampedusa\, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY)\, led by Deborah Soria\, launched the project “Silent Books\, from the world to Lampedusa and back” in 2012. The project involved creating the first library on Lampedusa to be used by local and immigrant children and annual Silent Book lists and exhibits that travel the globe.

DESCRIPTION:East Bay\nDiscussing: Go\, Went\, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck \nTeachers in ORIAS World History Reading Groups read one book each month within a world history/global studies theme. Books are intended to deepen teacher knowledge\, but may not be appropriate for classroom use. Participants meet monthly to eat and spend two hours in collegial conversation. It is a relaxing\, intellectually rich atmosphere for both new and experienced teachers. \nIn-service teachers are eligible for book reimbursements or\, in the case of regular attendees\, may receive the books ahead of time from ORIAS. Meetings are open to in-service k-12 and community college faculty. Space is limited.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online discussion of “Slavery and Islam\,” by Jonathan A.C. Brown. Brown\, a professor and the Prince Alwahleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization at Georgetown University\, explores the moral and ultimately theological problem of slavery across the Jewish\, Christian and primarily Islamic traditions. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Eve M Troutt-Powell. Dr. Eve M. Troutt Powell is a Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of History at Penn University of Pennsylvania. She teaches the history of the modern Middle East and the history of slavery in the Nile Valley and the Ottoman Empire. 25 free books will be available to those who sign up. There is also a PDF version online.
