DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online discussion of “Slavery and Islam\,” by Jonathan A.C. Brown. Brown\, a professor and the Prince Alwahleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization at Georgetown University\, explores the moral and ultimately theological problem of slavery across the Jewish\, Christian and primarily Islamic traditions. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Eve M Troutt-Powell. Dr. Eve M. Troutt Powell is a Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of History at Penn University of Pennsylvania. She teaches the history of the modern Middle East and the history of slavery in the Nile Valley and the Ottoman Empire. 25 free books will be available to those who sign up. DESCRIPTION:This presentation describes the programme of Second Chance Schools in Greece — content\, methodology\, financing\, accreditation — and goes a step forward to highlight the education opportunities for incarcerated adults. The presenter\, Nektaria Tziora\, will speak about the programme’s strengths and weaknesses and share her thoughts on challenges and opportunities for the future. Her first degree is in German Literature\, and her second degree is in Business Administration. Nektaria holds an MBA in Hospitality\, as well as an M.Ed. She is a certified adult educator and a teachers’ trainer by the A Greek Institute for Educational Policies-certified adult educator and teachers’ trainer\, Nektaria has worked in Greek primary and secondary schools for more than a decade. Since 2017 she has been working at the Second Chance School of Nigrita for adult male prisoners. Her professional inerests lie primarily in the use of new technologies in education and adult education for disadvantaged social groups.

This conference will gather scholars and graduate students from all fields to discuss the past and future of environmental awareness and challenges with East Asia as the context. The plenary talk from UArizona professor Dr. Hai Ren will touch on his interests in combining interdisciplinary research and a critical lens on humanity itself. Keynotes will follow from UArizona professors Dr. Rain Liu and Dr. Lisa Schrenk\, who will discuss ecology outreach and the history of disaster response to the 1930 Great Kantō Earthquake\, respectively. Completing the schedule\, four more presentations will be given on virtual field experiences\, water policy\, environmental resilience\, and sonic practices in Mongolia. In-person attendees will receive free entrance to the Biosphere 2 site\, a lunch\, and a shuttle bus service from the University of Arizona campus. DESCRIPTION:Happiness Without Freedom or Freedom Without Happiness: Slavic Science Fiction Literature and Film as Political and Social Commentary\nCSEEES Autumn 2023 K-14 Workshop \nIn this workshop participants will explore the world of “science fantasy” (known as science fiction in the West) literature and film from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Within this popular genre\, writers and filmmakers criticized economic\, political\, and social issues that citizens in these regions were facing in their everyday lives. Participants will increase their knowledge about the events and history that inspired these works\, how they have been received domestically and internationally in the past and present\, and how they have influenced the creative output of their Anglophone counterparts. This year’s workshop will be led by Alexander Burry\, Associate Professor of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University.

SUMMARY:Micro-Course: Technology\, Humanity\, and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:As humans rely more and more on electronic devices to support their everyday activities\, there are ever present warnings about the impacts such reliance has on human autonomy ranging from who owns and controls information networks\, the inequitable impact of technology consumption on peoples and places\, varying accessibility of technology around the globe\, and the promises and limitations of technology in improving human health. By engaging in technology as a lens\, this sequence of weekend micro-courses encourages students to examine technology as a system disproportionately impacting humanity by enabling and constraining human rights of groups of people around the globe. With a multi-disciplinary focus\, the course invites researchers and practitioners from the University of Pittsburgh\, Carnegie Mellon\, and relevant fields more broadly. In Fall 2023\, the focus will be on the impact technology has on human health. This will include a discussion about technology’s impact on human interactions\, including mental health amid a pandemic and the changing reliance on technology on health care delivery. It will also include a focus on the accessibility and disparities on health care’s increased use of technology across the globe as well as the transition to digitizing health records and the dangers this creates in relation to privacy\, among others. Previous micro-course sessions in this series focused on the environment and education.

SUMMARY:Building a Global Studies Certificate for All
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special fall session of our Global Studies Virtual Symposium\, an event that connects global studies scholars and educators across community college campuses nationwide. The symposium offers an engaging teaching and learning forum for sharing best practices\, ideas\, and resources with colleagues.\n\nDuring this special fall session\, Janet Scott and Nicole Trevana Flores at Southeast Community College in Nebraska will explore the process of creating and implementing a Global Studies Certificate and subsequently an Introduction to Global Studies course\, in order to obtain approval for the Certificate. In building the program\, constant efforts have been taken to ensure a broad\, yet specialized\, course approval process. Janet Scott and Nicole Trevena Flores will also discuss the marriage between the Certificate and the Denizen program to allow students several options for an internationalized focus.\n\nJanet Scott teaches Economics\, International Business\, and Intro to Global Studies at Southeast Community College. Janet grew up in Kenya\, has traveled to 48 different countries\, and has a passion for helping students explore new perspectives and find global connections. Janet has served on the SCC Global Education Team for ten years\, and in 2016 was co-leader for SCC’s service-learning trip to Kenya. Over the last 6 years\, Janet has worked with the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education to develop and share curriculum modules to integrate international content into Principles of Economics courses.\n\nNicole Trevena Flores holds an MA in Counseling and Sociology. She is a licensed mental health counselor\, teaches Psychology and Sociology\, and graduate-level Multicultural Counseling. At SCC she is the “Global Education Coordinator” and Department Chair for Social Science\, including the Global Studies Certificate\, she has served in both roles since 2019. She serves on the following boards: Midwest Institute for Intercultural /International Education\, NAFSA’s EAKC: Subcommittee on Health & Safety; Chair-Elect for the Community College IIG\, Co-Chair for the “Caregivers in International Education” MIG. In pursuit of the Study Abroad Certification\, this summer she attended the Forum for Study Abroad’s “Accelerated Residency”.

SUMMARY:Reading the World: A Book Group for K-12 Teachers Focused on Global Literature
DESCRIPTION:Brazilian educator Paulo Freire writes\, “Reading is not exhausted merely by decoding the written word or written language\, but rather anticipated by and extending into knowledge of the world. Reading the world precedes reading the word\, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined” (The Importance of the Act of Reading). \nJoin the University of Arizona Centers for East Asian Studies\, Latin American Studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies for our Reading the World book group. Inspired by Freire’s words\, we aim to create a space dedicated to educators discussing authentic and engaging global literature for elementary\, middle\, and high school classrooms. We welcome in-service and pre-service teachers\, educational aides\, administrators\, and librarians. \nWe meet each month from 4:30-6:00 pm at the Eckstrom-Columbus Library (4350 E 22nd St\, Tucson\, AZ 85711). We welcome your participation whether you’ve read the whole book or a single page. Monthly attendance is encouraged but not required. These monthly events are free and open to the public. \nThis Month: \nOur September title is the young adult novel\, The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. \nThe Last Cuentista is the winner of the John Newbery Medal and the Pura Belpré Award. \nFor questions\, please contact Katrina Dillon at kedillon@arizona.edu

DESCRIPTION:The Educators-in-Residence (EnR) program provides K-12 teachers the opportunity to expand their knowledge of contemporary European Studies topics\, transfer that knowledge to the precollegiate curriculum\, and network and collaborate with other educators across the country. During the program\, teachers will study contemporary Europe from a variety of disciplines and receive assistance in developing lesson plans and course modules\, including access to UF online resources.  \nDuration: 1 academic year (September – May)\nLocation: Online\, with optional in-person final workshop\nEligibility: US K-12 and community college educators\nDeadline: AY 23-24 deadline is August 18th

DESCRIPTION:Image:  “Woman Ironing\,” 1862-77\, Early Images of Latin America Collection\, Latin American Library\, Tulane University\n\n\nDigital humanities tools are evolving to put more and more sophisticated – and easy to use – tools in the hands of educators and students. Join us to learn how to use one of the newest additions\, Juncture\, an open-source framework to build multimedia exhibits. Juncture enables authors to build simple or complex narratives\, building on other open tools. Tap into existing digital collections and incorporate high resolution images\, zooming capabilities\, the ability to highlight and annotate specific areas of an object\, and provide context and narrative. All with web-based tools that are available to anyone. FREE!
