SUMMARY:Summer Arabic Language and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Join PhD Candidates and experienced teachers Mourad Abdennebi and Brittany Power to learn more about Arabic language and cultures! During the 15-hour Professional Development Workshop\, you will learn some basic Arabic conversation to help you connect with Arabic-speaking students and families. You will also learn about Arabic culture\, including ideas about time\, gender\, religion\, food\, and differences across the region. The instructors will share resources for you and your students to learn more\, and recommend materials to make your classroom more inclusive of Arabic cultures. There will also be plenty of time to address the questions that have come up in your teaching about Arabic language and culture. This will also help social workers and others working with refugee and immigrant populations from the Arabic-speaking world. \nAt the end of the session\, everyone who attends regularly will receive a certificate for 15 hours of professional development from the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies. The session will meet Mondays\, Wednesdays\, and Fridays June 9-27\, 1-2:30 pm Arizona/ Pacific Time via Zoom. \nBrittany Powers is a PhD Candidate in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, as well as an experienced K-12 teacher and a professional chef. \nMourad Abdennebi grew up in Morocco\, and he has worked as a teacher in both Morocco and the US. DESCRIPTION:The TCAB program is a unique\, year-long opportunity for 20 teachers from the United States and 20 teachers from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to engage in international dialogue and virtual exchange. \nIn fall 2025\, teachers will be placed in groups to engage in synchronous and asynchronous sessions to discuss topics related to education and culture in their respective countries\, as well as strategies to include this information in the classroom. \nIn spring 2026\, participating teachers will conduct a virtual exchange project in small groups between their students and report on their exchange experience at the end of the program. \nHow to Apply\n\nRead the full program description.\nComplete the application form.\n\nWhen you apply\, please consider that you are being evaluated on your statements. Give some thought to the content\, and consider all parts of each question. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion with Aya Khalil\, author of The Great Banned-Book Bake Sale\, winner of the 2024 Middle East Outreach Council Book Award for picture books and the Joy for Books Award. Ms. Khalil also wrote The Arabic Quilt\, a 2021 Honor Book for Young Children for the Children’s Africana Book Awards and winner of a 2021 Arab American Book Award. She has also published other books about and for Arab American children. \n\n\nSynopsis: \n“Kanzi\, the immigrant girl of Aya Khalil and Anait Semirdzhyan’s bestselling picture book The Arabic Quilt\, has come to feel welcome in her American school―that is\, until an entire shelf of books about immigrant kids and kids of color suddenly disappears from the school library. Upon learning that the books with kids who look like her have been banned by her school district\, Kanzi descends into fear and helplessness. But her classmates support her\, and together―with their teacher’s help―they hatch a plan to hold a bake sale and use the proceeds to buy diverse books to donate to libraries. The event is a big success; the entire school participates\, and the local TV station covers it in the evening news. Prodded by her classmates to read the poem she has written\, Kanzi starts softly but finds her voice. “You have banned important books\, but you can’t ban my words\,” she reads. “Books are for everyone.” The crowd chants\, “No banned books! DESCRIPTION:  \nThe University of Arizona’s U.S. Department of Education Title VI Centers — Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS)\, Center for Educational Resources in Culture\, Language and Literacy (CERCLL)\, Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) —  are excited to invite you to join our ninth annual Globalizing the Community College Curricula Conference. This year’s conference’s theme\, “Arts and Education without Borders\,” aims to explore innovative strategies and best practices for integrating global perspectives into community college curricula through the arts. \nArts encompass a wide range of creative expressions that include visual arts\, performing arts\, literary arts\, and more. Each form of art uses different mediums\, techniques\, and styles to convey ideas\, emotions\, and experiences. \nArts in education play a vital role in fostering a well-rounded and holistic learning experience. By incorporating arts into the curriculum\, educators help students develop essential life skills\, enhance their academic abilities\, and nurture their emotional and social well-being. \nAs our world becomes increasingly interconnected\, it is crucial for community colleges to prepare students to thrive in a globalized society. The arts provide a unique platform for fostering cross-cultural understanding\, empathy\, critical thinking\, and creative expression. The conference theme\, “Arts and Education without Borders\,” explores how the arts can be leveraged to globalize community college curricula\, creating more inclusive and culturally responsive educational experiences for students\, and preparing them for diverse\, multicultural environments. \nThis conference is free and will be meeting in-person only. Friday dinner and a light breakfast Saturday will be included for all participants. \nRegistration is required. For now\, please note the following preliminary schedule: \nFriday\, January 17: The keynote presentation will begin at 5:30 pm with a dinner to follow at 7:00 pm. \nAlana Hernandez will give the keynote lecture at the University of Arizona Poetry Center at 5:30 pm. This lecture is presented in collaboration with the Poetry Center\, the College of Humanities\, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, and the 9th Annual Globalizing the Community College Curricula Conference. \nHernandez is Senior Curator at the ASU Art Museum. In her curatorial practice\, Hernandez conceptualizes exhibitions and projects as relational and co-creative work with artists and develops projects that amplify intersectional and multifaceted interpretations of Latinx art.  She actively engages in a curatorial and methodological model that prioritizes visibility\, decentralized institutional authorship\, and community-embedded agency and works directly with constituencies to facilitate meaning-making that is generative\, mobilizing\, and transformative. In recent years\, much of Hernandez’s curatorial work centers on Latinx art and artists working with print and craft-based mediums and investigates how the aesthetic statements thus employed are integral\, often political producers of cultural consciousness. \nHernandez was previously Executive Director & Curator at CALA Alliance. She has held curatorial positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; Páramo\, Guadalajara\, Mexico; Hunter East Harlem\, New York; the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; the Phoenix Art Museum; and BRIC Arts Media\, Brooklyn. Her writing has appeared in several exhibition catalogues and online journals\, including HereIn Journal. SUMMARY:Reading the World: A Book Group for K-12 Educators Focused on Global Literature
DESCRIPTION:About:\nBrazilian educator Paulo Freire writes\, “Reading is not exhausted merely by decoding the written word or written language\, but rather anticipated by and extending into knowledge of the world. Reading the world precedes reading the word\, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined” (The Importance of the Act of Reading). \nJoin the University of Arizona Centers for East Asian Studies\, Latin American Studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies for our Reading the World book group. Inspired by Freire’s words\, we aim to create a space dedicated to educators discussing authentic and engaging global literature for elementary\, middle\, and high school classrooms. We welcome in-service and pre-service teachers\, educational aides\, administrators\, and librarians. \nWe meet each month from 4:30-6:00 pm at Revolutionary Grounds Books & Coffee (4675 E Speedway Blvd\, Tucson\, AZ). We welcome your participation whether you’ve read the whole book or a single page. Monthly attendance is encouraged but not required. These events are free and open to the public. No registration is required. A certificate of professional development will be provided upon request. \nThis Month:\nOur February title is the young adult novel\, The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. \nThe Last Cuentista is the winner of the John Newbery Medal and the Pura Belpré Award. \nHabía una vez . . .  \nThere lived a girl named Petra Peña\, who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller\, like her abuelita. But Petra’s world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet\, and only a few hundred scientists and their children — among them Petra and her family — have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race. Hundreds of years later\, Petra wakes to this new planet — and the discovery that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has taken over the ship during its journey\, bent on erasing the sins of humanity’s past. They have systematically purged the memories of all aboard — or purged them altogether. A certificate of professional development will be provided upon request. \nThis Month:\nOur January title is the young adult novel Morning Sun in Wuhan by Ying Chang Compestine. \nWeaving in the tastes and sounds of the historic city\, Wuhan’s comforting and distinctive cuisine comes to life as the reader follows 13-year-old Mei who\, through her love for cooking\, makes a difference in her community. Written by an award-winning author originally from Wuhan.  \nGrieving the death of her mother and an outcast at school\, thirteen-year-old Mei finds solace in cooking and computer games. When her friend’s grandmother falls ill\, Mei seeks out her father\, a doctor\, for help\, and discovers the hospital is overcrowded. As the virus spreads\, Mei finds herself alone in a locked-down city trying to find a way to help. \nAuthor Ying Chang Compestine draws on her own experiences growing up in Wuhan to illustrate that the darkest times can bring out the best in people\, friendship can give one courage in frightening times\, and most importantly\, young people can make an impact on the world. Readers can follow Mei’s tantalizing recipes and cook them at home.  \nFind the book at your local library or preferred bookseller.  \nIf you love the book and want to use it in your classroom\, The Center for East Asian Studies has a book set of 25 copies available to borrow through their Lending Library. SUMMARY:Teachers Collaborating Across Borders
DESCRIPTION:The international educators’ program\, Teachers Collaborating Across Borders (TCAB) is now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 academic year! This program\, organized by the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the North Carolina Consortium for Middle East Studies\, accepts 20 K-12 teachers from the US and 20 K-12 teachers from across the Middle East and North Africa. This cohort of 40 will meet biweekly during the Fall Semester\, half synchronously\, half asynchronously\, to learn about teaching in other regions. In the spring semester\, teachers will work in international groups on a joint exchange project to be done by the students. \nFor more information and the application link\, go to https://cmes.arizona.edu/outreach/TCAB_program.
