SUMMARY:The Importance of Global Workforce Skills
DESCRIPTION:In person institute in Minnesota sponsored by the International and African Title VI Centers at the University of Minnesota. \nAccording to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Development\, “Exports of manufactured goods\, services\, and agricultural commodities to foreign countries are an extremely important part of Minnesota’s economy\, accounting for $33 billion in revenue annually and tens of thousands of jobs statewide.” Meanwhile\, Minnesota’s population continues to diversify. Therefore\, CTE instructors must prepare their students to compete\, connect\, and cooperate in a global economy and within their diverse communities.  \nYou will leave this interactive\, hands-on training with an understanding of which workforce readiness skills are important for success in the global economy and how to integrate them into what you are already teaching\, while meeting your required standards. We will work with you to integrate global content into your courses and share examples of engaging CTE projects as well as free online professional development courses and tools. Employer perspectives will be shared by a panel of local business leaders.   \nHeld in person on campus at the University of Minnesota West Bank. 9:00 am-4 pm\, June 10-11\, 2024

SUMMARY:China-Africa Contemporary Relations: a Summer Institute for Educators
DESCRIPTION:China’s ascendancy as a dominant economic and political global power has been the subject of much scholarly and political debate. More specifically\, China’s renewed interest in Africa continues to beg the question\, what is China’s Africa strategy or Africa – China Strategy? Some scholars suggest that China’s strategic interests in Africa are purely economic\, resource extraction\, and exploitation\, which has led to renewed concerns about neo-colonialism. Other questions raised include how this arrangement will benefit African countries engaged with China. This course seeks to examine these issues and better understand how China’s engagement in Africa may have a consequential impact on the continent. \nDates: June 26-29\, 2023 \nTime: 9 am-1:30 pm CDT \nRegistration fee: free (includes parking\, lunch and all materials) \nRegistration plus on-campus housing for June 25-29\, 2023:  $275  \nRegistration deadline: June 12\, 2023\, or until full \nRegistration link: https://z.umn.edu/chinaafrica \nCEUs: 20 contact hours \nWhere: In person\, University of Minnesota West Bank\, Minneapolis MN
