SUMMARY:Foundational Seminar: Crossroads of East Asia: Movement through Time and Place
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual journey that will introduce East Asia’s diverse cultures and environment while building and enhancing your tool chest of teaching resources for the classroom. Focusing on the regions that comprise present-day China\, Japan\, and Korea\, participants in this free online seminar will engage with experts and other educators in the field to explore major trends\, global issues\, and historic foundations that shape East Asian society. Through hands-on activities\, and opportunities to engage with content experts and with other educators\, the cohort will learn about East Asia’s diverse cultures to enhance teaching resources in the classroom. A broad range of innovative teaching materials will be shared\, engaging social-emotional learning (SEL)\, education in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)\, social studies\, ELA\, and other cross-curricular approaches to society and culture. The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA)\, funded by the Freeman Foundation\, is an initiative to foster a permanent place for the teaching and study of East Asia at the middle and secondary school levels. DESCRIPTION:Reading group for K-16 educators explores texts through a global perspective. \nThis professional development workshop series is designed for K-12 educators seeking to deepen their understanding of global issues through literature. This year\, we will explore the theme of “The U.S. in the World.” Through global and regional perspectives\, we will discuss narratives of a “Global United States\,” where the U.S. role in the world and its relationship with other countries and regions is informed by transnational narratives and dialogues shaped by global trends such as migration\, environmental issues\, human rights\, and human conditions. By exploring compelling stories from diverse cultural perspectives\, educators will gain insights into the complexities of this theme\, its impact on individuals and communities\, and how to engage students in meaningful discussions around these topics.

SUMMARY:Summer Arabic Language and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Join PhD Candidates and experienced teachers Mourad Abdennebi and Brittany Power to learn more about Arabic language and cultures! During the 15-hour Professional Development Workshop\, you will learn some basic Arabic conversation to help you connect with Arabic-speaking students and families. You will also learn about Arabic culture\, including ideas about time\, gender\, religion\, food\, and differences across the region. The instructors will share resources for you and your students to learn more\, and recommend materials to make your classroom more inclusive of Arabic cultures. There will also be plenty of time to address the questions that have come up in your teaching about Arabic language and culture. This will also help social workers and others working with refugee and immigrant populations from the Arabic-speaking world. \nAt the end of the session\, everyone who attends regularly will receive a certificate for 15 hours of professional development from the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies. The session will meet Mondays\, Wednesdays\, and Fridays June 9-27\, 1-2:30 pm Arizona/ Pacific Time via Zoom. \nBrittany Powers is a PhD Candidate in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, as well as an experienced K-12 teacher and a professional chef. \nMourad Abdennebi grew up in Morocco\, and he has worked as a teacher in both Morocco and the US. SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Afghanistan in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Upstate New York has welcomed a significant number of Afghan families in recent years. This virtual workshop provides approaches and tools for elementary school educators to introduce Afghanistan into their curriculum and provide a nuanced view of the people and culture. Participating educators will receive (a) an overview of Afghanistan’s history and current political situation; (b) activity ideas and materials exploring cultural themes like holidays\, letters and numbers\, language\, food\, clothing\, etc.; and (c) age-appropriate songs and stories addressing more complex issues like education\, gender\, politics\, and religion. The workshop is facilitated by Akbar Quraishi and Amy Friers\, alumni of Syracuse University’s Public Administration and International Affairs program\, who both have extensive experience in Afghanistan. Together\, they founded an international relations-focused university in Kabul\, in addition to working with the previous Afghan government and NGOs in Afghanistan. This workshop is supported by the federally funded Cornell-Syracuse South Asia National Resource Center Consortium. “Afghanistan in the Classroom” is specifically designed for elementary grades\, though educators of all ages and subject areas are welcome to attend. \nRegistration deadline is August 13th.

DESCRIPTION:French Teachers!\nDo you want to make your French language classroom a welcoming and inclusive place for all students?  Please join us for this special\, one-time workshop with Egale\, Canada’s leading organization for 2SLGBTQI+ people and issues. An experienced facilitator will conduct the 90-minute interactive small-group workshop with a cohort of fellow French teachers from across the US. Although the meeting is on Zoom\, participation will be in real-time. Instruction will be chiefly in French with some English explanations.
