Teaching Television in a European Studies Context | Mandy Moore, PhD Candidate, Department of English
Teaching television always creates a particular set of pedagogical challenges, including accessibility, interdisciplinary scaffolding, and the difficulty of assigning long-form media texts. This presentation will address how a specifically European media context can be leveraged to navigate those challenges in ways that are productive for students’ learning and critical thinking. The particular history of the TV industry in Europe and the mediated construction of European identities provide an ideal early point for students to approach television studies, especially as it relates to flows of power. Using a module from my upcoming Spring 2024 course “European Television on Netflix,” Moore will discuss the pedagogical benefits of a cross-disciplinary dialogue between television students and European studies.
